Greater Victoria includes the City of Victoria and 13 other municipalities and 2electoral areas. The region covers the southern tip of Vancouver Island, including the Gulf Islands. A large portion of Vancouver Islands population is located on the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island (Greater Victoria, population approximately 350,000 2008). Victoria is the main tourist centre and provides a wide variety of accommodations to visitors. The majority of the accommodations are in the downtown area. This is called the City Core and takes in part of the City of Victoria and Vic West. Within about 15 minutes of the Core, you will find an array of accommodations in the Municipalities of Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt and View Royal. If you go out a little futher you will find even more accommodations. North of Victoria you will find beautiful Sidney by the Sea, a small community on the Saanich Peninsula. Butchart Gardens in on the Peninsula and there are lots of accommodation choices throughout the Saanich Peninsula. It is a 17 mile long stretch of land heading north of Victoria to the BC Ferry Terminal at Swartz Bay. If you go West of Victoria you will enter the communities of Colwood, Langford, the Highlands and Metchosin (collectively called the West Shore). Most of these communities are about 20 minutes from the city core. Still further to the west is the community of Sooke. It is about 40 minutes from the core of Victoria. Most of the accommodations in the Sooke area are bed and breakfasts. The world famous Sooke Harbour House is located in Sooke.
